Located in the vibrant heart of Exarchia, Athens, The Interwoven City explores how existing urban structures can be reimagined as catalysts for sustainable city life. This architectural project transforms a neglected 1970s concrete building into a flexible and resilient habitat one that accommodates urban change, preserves historical memory, and promotes a collective sense of belonging.

Designed as an innovative hybrid model of living and co-sharing, the renovated building houses 19 boutique suites, each featuring private outdoor spaces. The mixed-use development includes a lively ground-floor restaurant, alongside essential wellness, laundry, and storage facilities in the basement. Bridging these private programs are shared dialogue spaces integrated on every level, creating vital moments of social exchange and community connection across the building's façade.

The project’s defining architectural gesture is its adaptive envelope. We designed a new porous skin consisting of elegant curved balconies and perforated ceramic panels. This innovative façade naturally filters sunlight, improves natural ventilation, and operates as an effective passive cooling system. Heavily inspired by classic Athenian mid-century typologies, this architectural skin beautifully weaves local design identity with contemporary environmental intelligence.

Sustainability is deeply embedded at every stage of The Interwoven City. By prioritizing the adaptive reuse of the existing structure, we significantly reduced construction waste. Our approach emphasizes the selection of locally sourced, low-carbon, and bio-based building materials. Furthermore, the building’s highly flexible floor plan allows it to successfully operate today as a modern co-living hotel, while ensuring it can transform effortlessly into independent urban residences in the future, thereby maximizing its lifespan and social relevance.

The Interwoven City advocates for an architecture that does not erase, but actively regenerates. We view sustainability not merely as a design style, but as a fundamental way of thinking. It is an architectural philosophy that honors the urban context, values historical continuity, and ensures that our modern interventions will leave no future ruins in the cityscape of Athens.
